Biography

Simon Pope (1966, UK) is currently researching walking as a visual art practice. He often works collaboratively or on large-scale, participatory projects: Walking Here & There, with psychologist Vaughan Bell, is a Wellcome Trust SciArt award, testing the impact of memory on walking; the solo-exhibition Gallery Space Recall (Chapter,Cardiff, 2006) extends this work into the gallery; Walking Together, with Sociologist Pascal Gielen, investigates modes of sociality & walking in visual art and establishes a colloquium for 'walking artists' (2006-2009); Charade, commissioned by Arts Council England & BBC, (2006-7) explores techniques of memorizing and recall in new broadcast networks; The Shape of Locative Media, published in Mute magazine (2005) presented a critique of location-specific new media practices. Forthcoming exhibitions include the group show Waterlog, curated by Jeremy Millar (2007).

Simon represented Wales at their inaugural exhibition at the Venice Biennale of Fine Art, 2003 and was awarded a NESTA Fellowship (2002-2005). Previous work includes Art for Networks (2002/3) London Walking (2001), Ice Cream For Everyone (1999-) and I/O/D 4: The Web Stalker, (1996).

Simon is a Reader at Cardiff School of Art & Design and is a Research Associate at Transmedia, Hogeschool Sint Lukas, Brussels and Goldsmith's College, Digital Studios London.
