Cluster will be performed at Glyde Hall Studio 13

Thursday November 16th 4.30pm

see below (distribution ReadMe for more notes )

Introduction

Chantal and Julian are developing a colloborative sound piece called Cluster which will be developed into a musical/audio mediascape performance.

The piece is going to be authored in 3 parts - a series of recorded performances, a scored joint Choral Walk where everyone will sing, and a mediascape structure. The piece will be performed as a mediascape walk.

Performances

Each artist/participant in the lab (and any other interested performers) are invited to come and perform a short piece which will be recorded.

You can use any instrument or non instrument that generates sound apart from voice. You don't have to be a trained musician and you can use anything that makes noise, but you must be able to play it expressivley. We will be asking you to improvise a performance based on a series of instructions. You can also choose your 'instrument' depending on the instructions we give.

Please sign up here:

Please meet at Studio 13 in Glyde Hall (the collaboration studio). We have portable recording equipment if you need to go to a particular place for your performance.

Cluster

15th November 2006

Cluster is a piece developed for mediascape by Chantal Dumas and Julian Priest with performances by:

Additional programming

Each performer was invited to bring an instrument to the recording studio. Performers chose a Mood and Adjective and a Colour from a set of cards and rolled dice to determine, the pitch, duration and dynamic of their piece.

Cluster can be played in duo, trio, quartet, quintet, and cluster as well, by interacting with other participants.

Description

The sounds and images of each performer are associated with a radio beacon called a pinger carried by each particpant along with a pinger detector and an ipaq with headphones. As another participant approaches a pinger carrier, the sound associated with that participant begins to play along with a short sequence of images of their performance, instrument and directions.

As more pingers come into range their sounds and image sequences are also triggered.

By clustering in different formations, participants can experience different ensembles or mixes of the recordings.

The piece reveals the radio propogation charactersistics of the built environment that the ensemble is moving through.

The ensemble is not dependent on any location, but only on the relative location of the participants - their own radio transmission and reception linking the group.

The piece knows one location - marked by an infrared beacon, that is the recording and choral walk studio. Standing in this room will play the collaborative pieces developed there on the open score.
